Diabetes remission

What is diabetes remission?

Diabetes remission occurs when HbA1c is less than 6.5% (blood glucose below the diabetes diagnosis level) for at least 2 months with no diabetes medications. It is currently believed that diabetes remission is possible for people who were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within the last 6 years and who are currently overweight. Research shows that the best chance of diabetes remission is with weight loss of more than 10kg in a short amount of time (8-12 weeks), but not everyone who loses weight will achieve remission. In the research trial conducted in the United Kingdom, 46% of study participants achieved diabetes remission and 36% were still in remission 12 months later.
